Affeldt managed to text Madison Bumgarner with his good hand to say what happened and Bumgarner thought his teammate was being a drama king, exaggerating the wound. Bumgarner responded to the bleeding victim, “You could probably toughen up a little bit, couldn’t you?”

“Basically, he called me a wuss,” Affeldt recalled this week. “I said, ‘What? I just put a knife in my hand. I’m on the table in 45 minutes and they’re going to cut me open and repair me, and I’m going to stay in the hospital.’”

Bumgarner became apologetic and asked if he could visit Affeldt in the hospital, to which Affeldt responded, “No. No. You don’t even get the right to visit me now. I showed up the next day with this big old claw in my hand and I showed it to him. I told him, ‘When you cut your foot off, I’m going to laugh.’”
